Desde que la Ciudad de Oakland abrió la primera oficina para emitir la identificación oficial con modalidad de tarjeta de débito pre-pagada el pasado 1ero. de febrero más de 3,300 personas han solicitado dicha identificación. Este programa único combina el empoderamiento de una identificación emitida por el gobierno con los servicios bancarios a los que muchos miembros de la comunidad no tienen fácil acceso.

Las mesas color verde claro, los asientos de vinil café opaco, y un cuadro de los hermanos Kennedy cuelga encima de la caja registradora en este modesto restaurante en el boulevard de la International en Oakland.

There isn’t much that’s changed at La Mexicana since the restaurant’s beginnings in 1932. The tables are key lime, the vinyl booths dull brown, and a framed portrait of the Kennedy brothers hangs over the cashier at this modest eatery on Oakland’s International Blvd. “I’ve ordered the same chorizo enchilada and rice and beans for forty years,” said diner Tom Borst of Oakland. “Although when I was younger I had three tortillas and a chile relleno on the side too.”

Terry Alderete, a real person, a real role model.

Our community has lost a true role model. Terry Alderete passed away on March 21. She was too modest to think of herself as a role model, but that is how I and many people saw her.

In business, Terry was a marketer, an event planner, the driving force behind big community events such as Oakland’s Cinco de Mayo festival. She was a connecter, a volunteer, an achiever - she wanted to see things happen for other people and for the community.

Local kids walk and bike to school to compete for award

Local contest motivates families to start walking or biking to school in a fun, community building way. Photo: Rig Galvez.

Students in more than 60 schools across Alameda County are walking, biking, and carpooling this month, competing in the "Pollution Solution Golden Sneaker Contest" as part of the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program. The two-week contest started March 4, and encourages families to get active while reducing pollution.
 
"This contest motivates families to start walking or biking to school in a fun, community building way," said Alameda CTC Chair Supervisor Scott Haggerty. "It supports our efforts to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting safe access to schools."
