Oakland introduces identification card with debit card features

”We are expecting about thirty thousand people to apply for the card in the first year,” said Arturo Sanchez, Deputy City Administrator for the City of Oakland.

Oakland is the first city in the country offering municipal ID cards with prepaid debit card features. Launched last week, the Oakland City ID Prepaid MasterCard program makes the city the first municipality in the country to issue a city ID prepaid debit card to provide a government ID for its residents now lacking an official form of identification; and to provide optional, secure financial services and products to those who cannot otherwise secure them. All city residents able to provide proof of identity and residency in Oakland are eligible for the card.

Camina y entra a Rumbo al Sur en viernes por la noche y el bar está lleno de clientes quienes saborean margaritas mientras las canciones de música de samba se escuchan a través de las bocinas, y los platos de ceviche, empanadas y churros se ven sobre las mesas. El restaurante fue abierto en el 2011 por el mismo equipo que opera el restaurante A Cote, Rumbo al Sur ofrece un menú de platillos tipo tapas, vinos de México y Sudamérica, y cocteles hechos de jugos frescos y licores latinoamericanos.

Walk into Rumbo al Sur on a Friday night and the bar is packed with patrons sipping margaritas while samba music sings through the speakers, and plates of ceviche, empanadas, and churros dot the tables. Opened in 2011 by the team of A Cote restaurant, Rumbo al Sur offers a tapas-style menu of dishes and wine from Mexico and South America, and cocktails made with fresh juices and Latin American spirits.

Leyes más severas en Oakland para combatir el grafiti

“El grafiti es una molestia pública en un gran número de áreas de Oakland, y si el problema no es administrado, puede alentar a un vandalismo más serio y a otros crímenes”.
 
El grafiti ahora considerado como vandalismo es un problema muy costoso y el gobierno de la ciudad de Oakland está planeando imponer leyes más severas para castigar el acto como delictivo e imponer responsabilidad financiera. Barbara Parker, Consejera de la Ciudad recientemente dio a conocer detalles de la Graffiti Enforcement Ordinance, la cual actualizará la ley de Oakland y le da a la Ciudad más herramientas para combatir el grafiti. Aumenta las sanciones por vandalismo y mantiene a los padres responsables por el vandalismo creado por sus hijos.

Few days ago, the so-called Gang of Eight senators revealed a blueprint for an immigration reform bill. Details in the actual legislation will matter a great deal but these are initial impressions based on the blueprint. The good and the bad.

Good:

- Earned legalization for non-criminal unauthorized immigrants. After paying fines, back taxes, undergoing a criminal background check, and other firm penalties, unauthorized immigrants will be able to stay in the United States and eventually earn a green card. This will increase their wages over several years much faster than if they remained unauthorized.
