Audit: Oakland mismanaged police technology

“Oakland is experiencing a public safety crisis, yet the City has drawn down our very limited financial resources on some police technology systems without significant benefit to the citizens of Oakland,” said City Auditor Ruby. “Purchasing any technology system requires careful planning and coordination; otherwise you end up just throwing money at a problem as this audit showed.”

Oakland Police spent $1.87 million on systems that were never used or underused ---  

An audit by Oakland City Auditor Courtney Ruby has revealed that at least $1.87 million was spent on police technology systems that were never used ($1.3 million) or underused ($0.5 million). The audit reviewed Oakland Police Department’s (OPD) purchasing and technology management during fiscal years 2006-07 through 2010-11, including the support services provided by the Department of Information Technology (DIT).

On July 21, the U.S.S. Hornet in Alameda commemorated the 43rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. A highlight of the commemoration event aboard the historic aircraft carrier was an unveiling of a special exhibit featuring former astronaut Jose M. Hernandez, who addressed the attending crowd before joining a meet and greet session.

In early June, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan announced a significant reduction in crime during the previous 30 days. Citywide, -Burglaries were down 20%, -Robberies were down 24%, -Property Crimes were down 18% and -Violent Crimes were down 14%.

Chief Jordan attributed the reduction to enhanced community involvement, implementing additional resources and crime strategies, and partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. An example of the Oakland Police Department’s partnerships is Project Gideon III, a law enforcement initiative involving federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and their collaboration with OPD officers.

La estrategia principal para combatir el crimen en Oakland es enfocarse en los esfuerzos para prevenir la violencia en los vecindarios mayormente impactados por el crimen violento. Los dueños de negocios comentan sobre los progresos y la realidad en las calles.

A principios de junio, el Jefe de la Policía Howard Jordan dio a conocer una reducción muy significativa del crimen durante los treinta días previos. A lo largo y ancho de la ciudad, los allanamientos de morada habían bajado un 20 por ciento, los robos a mano armada se redujeron en un 24 por ciento, los crímenes a la propiedad fueron reducidos en un 18 por ciento y los crímenes violentos habían bajado un 14 por ciento.
