Negotiations with teacher’s union seeks budget concessions --

The school district in Hayward may soon suffer the same fate that Oakland’s has in recent years – a state takeover of its budget and administration. The Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) failed to submit a balanced budget to the County of Alameda on the Sept. 8 deadline, though the district is still looking for ways to cut approximately eight million dollars in budget expenses. By state law school districts have to show a balanced budget for its next year and the two following years.

Though California still hasn’t completed its state budget, many programs and institutions have been affected by budget cuts intended to close the $19 billion deficit.

In Hayward, one pre-school has been affected as layoff notices have been delivered to at least seven child development teachers. Parents have been informead that the last day the Helen Turner Preschool will be open is July 15.

“I'm really trying to focus a hundred percent in school and make something of myself,” says Robert Rosas, who was awarded a scholarship at a recent event in Newark. The Newark resident attended Ohlone College a few years ago but had to drop out because his father abandoned the family. “I was left as the man in the family so I stepped up and tried to help my family however possible,” he says.
