When the Sun Stepped Aside
The Sun and Moon meet above the Atlantic in Portugal. There are moments when nature reminds us, rather abruptly, that we are not running the show. I stood on the top of a cliff at Sagres, facing the immense Atlantic, waiting for the moon to move...

Coyote Hills in Fremont - East Bay Regional Parks District

People often feel that real change in society is impossible. Sometimes they stop trying to create change because the challenges seem so large. To restore our hope and energy, I think we need to look at things that have changed for the better – things that we didn’t think were possible. I just learned of a great example of progressive change here in Alameda County that is natural, human, and inspiring. Doctors at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland are now encouraging their patients to spend time in nature as part of their healing. Instead of prescribing only the usual hospital treatments, these doctors have acknowledged the real healing ability of being in outdoor places like parks and beaches.

Children’s Hospital Oakland has partnered with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) to bring families to nature for health. Through the generosity of the Regional Parks Foundation, a Nature Shuttle bus takes patients, their families, and accompanying clinic staff to a variety of East Bay Regional Parks on the first Saturday of each month. Dr. Nooshin Razani says the result has been magical. The doctor writes about the program in this issue of Vision Hispana.

Many people know that spending time in nature - away from urban noise, pollution, and congestion - gives them energy and helps reset their views of self, life, and the world. We are part of nature and staying connected with it is vital to vibrant living. Walking or lounging in a green space outdoors automatically changes your emotions and your biology. Our environment determines our mental and physical health for better or for worse. Being in nature sends positive, calming messages to our mind and body. Fresh air oxygenates every cell in our body.

Medical doctors are slowly acknowledging the healing ability of nature and I give a lot of credit to the East Bay Regional Park District and Children’s Hospital Oakland for partnering to create this revolutionary shift in patient care. I think it points to the future of a healthcare system that is more integrative, holistic and human.
