Though California still hasn’t completed its state budget, many programs and institutions have been affected by budget cuts intended to close the $19 billion deficit.

In Hayward, one pre-school has been affected as layoff notices have been delivered to at least seven child development teachers. Parents have been informead that the last day the Helen Turner Preschool will be open is July 15.

“I'm really trying to focus a hundred percent in school and make something of myself,” says Robert Rosas, who was awarded a scholarship at a recent event in Newark. The Newark resident attended Ohlone College a few years ago but had to drop out because his father abandoned the family. “I was left as the man in the family so I stepped up and tried to help my family however possible,” he says.

Melissa Andres used to feel scared and unsafe going to her high school. Violent fights and threats among students created an environment of fear that students wanted to escape. In addition to the everyday conflicts, there was always at least one major incident every year at San Leandro High School: a deadly shooting, even a murder-suicide.

“I remember that many students wanted to get transferred to a different school - I was one of them,” says Melissa.
